A question about Fighter

So, I get that when a Fighter starts out, they have their main ability, then three branches, how they use it, right? Well, when they buy a new ability, they can gain a new, albeit related, ability, right? Or a new branch?

You can purchase whichever one you want. A new facet of an existing ability or a new ability entirely (related or no). Whichever one you think works first.
